Couple options – Make an absolute intensity effect that dips intensity by a determined amount (say 20%) with a high trail and apply it to a random selection of cells of the panel, or make an absolute effect with different color temps as each step (like 2-3 steps with one being background), again high trail (20%) and a random cell selection when applying the effect. You could speed up and slow down these effects in the live window or combine them if you need more variation.

I like how you are thinking. FWIW- my gaffer would find 20% a BIG change. But your logic is tight and well thought and more importantly- easy to change when redirected. I especially love the CCT variants, but I’ve never sold a DP on naturally occurring CCT changes in an effect. I wonder if there are DPs out there that are welcoming of such things? (I’ve only worked in film for about four years, so I don’t have the largest sample set.)

i have never worked on a film set and never used these fixtures, and am entirely a LORT theatrical ME/programmer, so I was just guessing at what intensity would be subtle. I like the idea of using multiple background steps. I’m not sure what cct you use to shoot normally but I was thinking a shift between something like 6k and 4-5k, but then again I don’t know how that would affect the camera.
