There has been a TON of talk about the laws passed in the EU about cybersecurity and how it will impact the very open protocols that we use in entertainment. As long as I’ve been listening, the only thing I’ve heard is “What are we gonna do?” Until now.
A new protocol was apparently shown at PLASA this year and everyone is now talking about it. Don’t mistake me for someone with inside knowledge or even in depth understanding at the point. But everyone in the lighting industry needs to stay on top of a third protocol/successor to sACN and Artnet. Sig-net comes to us from the same person who created Artnet- Wayne Howell.
It features what sounds like the best of every protocol. A little sACN (but vaguely promises to solve the IMGP saturation problem), some Artnet, some RDMNet, and a smattering of other protocols (including one that belongs to ETC). Equally impressive is the list of lighting manufacturers that have already signed on. Nearly everyone is already publicly on board with this.
What am I going to do about it? Well, I’m going to be at LDI this year and for family reasons, I’m going to be in London shortly after. I’m going to scour the internet for any class or talk being held about this new protocol so I can start learning about it. I’m also going to swing for the back of the stadium and see if Wayne might agree to meet up. (A nerd can dream.)
What should you do? Up to you. But whatever you choose, I would encourage you to stay proactive. Technology can change with blinding speed and we will be expected to change with it. Start by checking out the materials on the website. https://sig-net.net/
You can also check out this video where Wayne talks you through the protocol.
Anyone already attended any talks or presentations? Would love to hear from you!
